A Grandmother's Advice

Why won't you listen to those who tell you
You've barely begun to live
You want too much to happen too quickly
One must appreciate what they have now

You've barely begun to live
Graduation still echoes in your heart
One must appreciate what they have now
All too soon it will be gone.

Graduation still echoes in your heart
You wish to take back your past
All too soon it will be gone
Memories fade and dreams can die.

You wish to take back your past
Take a moment in time to preserve
Memories from fading and dreams from dying
To hold on to the surge of life you felt.

Take a moment in time to preserve
The potential that you now have
To hold on to the surge of life you feel
Before you grow old, bitter, embracing despair.

The potential that you now have
Defines who you are and what you can become
Don't grow old, bitter, and embrace despair
Try to live and let go of your past.

Defining who you are and what you can become
Is a mission that takes a lifetime to complete
Try to live and let go of your past
Too much baggage will stop you in your tracks.

A mission that takes a lifetime to complete
Is only recognized in life's self-reflection
Too much baggage will stop you in your tracks
Someone explained this when I was your age

Memories fade and dreams will die
Graduation still echoes in your heart
You must appreciate what you have now
For you've barely begun to live.
